Fear may relate to an injection, a previous experience, gagging, sounds, or a feeling of losing control. Tell the team before treatment. An agreed stop signal, explanations before each step and planned breaks can make a meaningful difference. A first consultation can focus on assessment and discussing a manageable approach.
Local anaesthesia controls pain
Local anaesthetic numbs a defined area while you remain awake. You may still notice pressure, vibration or movement. The dentist checks the effect before proceeding; report sharp pain rather than trying to tolerate it. Sedation and local anaesthesia have different jobs, and sedation does not usually remove the need to numb the treatment area.
What sedation changes
Inhalation sedation commonly uses nitrous oxide with oxygen through a nosepiece. Oral or intravenous medicines are other options in suitable settings. With conscious sedation, you remain able to respond, although you may feel drowsy and remember less. The route alone does not define the depth of sedation. Training, monitoring, rescue capability and patient selection are essential.
General anaesthesia produces controlled unconsciousness and requires a separate assessment and appropriate facility. It is not simply a stronger version of an ordinary numbing injection.
Assessment comes before choosing a method
Discuss your medicines, allergies, previous anaesthetic problems, pregnancy, sleep apnoea and relevant heart or lung conditions. Do not take someone else's sedative or combine a calming medicine with alcohol. The treating service gives instructions about food, drink, regular medicines, an escort and activities after treatment. Restrictions differ by method; never assume that feeling alert means you can drive.
