Restore a tooth that needs coverage
A crown covers a prepared tooth to restore shape and function. It may be considered after substantial structural loss, certain fractures, or root canal treatment when the remaining tooth needs protection.
Can less coverage work?
A filling or onlay may preserve more healthy tissue in a suitable tooth. The decision depends on remaining structure, cracks, bite forces, and the ability to create a maintainable restoration—not simply on the size of an old filling.
Treatment and material choice
The dentist assesses the tooth, discusses alternatives, prepares it when indicated, records its shape, and checks the crown before final placement. Material choice considers visibility, thickness, support, and the opposing teeth. A root canal is not automatically required for every crown.
Risks and maintenance
Sensitivity, later pulp problems, decay at the margin, loosening, or fracture can occur. Tell the dentist if the bite feels high, pain persists, or the crown moves. Continue cleaning the tooth and surrounding gum.
